Lumbreras de Noche
The painting's title in English translates to "Night Lights." A tranquil night landscape illuminated by many lights, the moon to the lamp posts, both natural and unnatural forms of light illuminate the night sky. The pond reflects amid the dark. This scene was inspired by a local pond. Being amidst the beginning of the night isn't so dark there. I was surprised by how illuminated the night was. There was some light on the horizon, indicating the far city lights. Meanwhile, all the lampposts and homes lit up the ground. The still pond reflected all the sparkling traces of light.
Painting night landscapes is a challenge for any artist. Night paintings are cooler colored (dark greens, blues, purples). A light source calls for warm colors. It was what I did with this painting. I added warm pinks, oranges, and yellows to the reflection on the pond and homes in the background. Value is also important in dark scenes. Mid-tones and lights coming from the light source will reinforce the painting. There is still more for me to discover in night paintings. That is one of the reasons I kept it on a smaller scale. Soon I will take a larger sized canvas. If you have any tips and suggestions you can leave them below in the comment section.
